Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra performing on stage

Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra (RYJO)

Fourth quarter, 2022, was an exciting time for the RJO, as we merged the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra into our organization.

RYJO is the vehicle for big band jazz ensemble experience for local middle and high school musicians. The orchestra performs throughout the Northern Nevada and Northern California area, offering, on average, twelve performances during their nine-month season.

The orchestra was established in 2006, co-founded by Vernon Scarbrough and Karen Scarbrough. Vernon continues to be the Orchestra's Music Director, and Karen, the Director of Programs and Development.

Be sure to save the dates for this year's performance schedule. These young musicians are talented and dedicated; their music is awesome.

The Reno Jazz Orchestra's Conductor Search Finale

The RJO embarked on a conductor search this past fall to find a permanent replacement for me. I had the privilege of leading the orchestra for sixteen years and have been enjoying seeing the candidates lead the orchestra. Three of the candidates have already led the orchestra (more on that later) with one more to go, Dr. Greg Johnson. He will lead the orchestra March 10 featuring his compositions and arrangements. Check out the link at the bottom of this article where you can purchase tickets. I had a nice talk with Greg and here is what I learned about him. . .
